What They Had

TIME OUT SAYS

When it comes to dramas pulling on the heartstrings, nothing manages to do it quite as well as a movie about a terminal illness. In What They Had, Bridget (Hilary Swank) returns to her hometown after her mother (Blythe Danner), who suffers from Alzheimers, wanders out into a blizzard on Christmas Eve. She’s slowly forgetting who she is, and who her family is. Bridget and her brother (the always-excellent Michael Shannon) try to convince their father (Robert Forster) to put her in a nursing home, but he isn’t quite ready to let go of his lifelong love. The tender film has some truly superb  performers, and it’s already nabbed the extremely specific Truly Moving Picture award.
