Picking the perfect  restaurant to keep all the family happy can be a bit of a daunting task.

Whether your kid hates seafood, refuses point blank to eat anything green or would love to survive on a diet of fries, the fraught process of deciding on where to dine can turn a family night out into more of a nightmare.

Enter US celebrity chef Todd English, with his brilliant Food Hall concept at The Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue.

There’s one huge menu with 12 different sections. But rather than having a single overworked kitchen producing every single dish, there are 12 different kitchens with their own teams of chefs scattered throughout the 12,000sq ft urban-style restaurant.

And it works flawlessly.

Each kitchen is open – so you can watch your food being prepared – and has its own brand, but each table is served by one waiter with the whole meal coming under a single bill.

This restaurant is also absolutely massive, so whether you’re looking for an urban, street food atmosphere or something a bit higher end for a special family celebration, there are different areas to cater for your taste.

That’s not to mention the incredible views over the half-hourly Dubai Fountain show, which is a fun interlude in the middle of dinner.

It’s a top setting for our meal, which takes in cuisine from around the world, starting off with a gooey cheese manakeesh from Mezza House, which goes down a treat. We move on to a Caprese salad, featuring some of the biggest chunks of rich and creamy burrata we’ve ever seen.

We also opt for vegetable shumai from the Asian kitchen, Noodle. The mini dumplings are full of both colour and flavour – so much so that we gobble down four in less than a minute.

Back to Italian, the mac ’n’ cheese is excellent. It’s served perfectly al dente, with the rich homemade sauce retaining that cheesy stringiness that we can’t get enough of.

The service here is a bit hit-and-miss (we’ll never know what that pizza was like), but the staff do pretty well considering the sheer size of the menu.

And most importantly, whether your kids are picky about their dinners, refuse to eat the same cuisine or just want to try something new, this is the perfect place for a family meal out that will keep everyone happy.
Open daily, 10am-midnight. Unlicensed. Fashion Avenue, The Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai (04 526 9086).
