If you find yourself strolling along the boardwalks in La Mer this winter, be sure to take that extra step into Treej Café for some tasty, local dishes.

This café captures the essence of Emirati culture and tradition but gives it a modern, casual twist. Coming from the team behind classic Emirati restaurant Al Fanar, Treej is a younger, hipper take on things, with the slogan “Emirati and beyond”.

A simple yet colourful interior is adorned with beautiful mosaic flooring and a large mural covering one of the entrance walls. The casual atmosphere is welcoming and bright, while staff are friendly and helpful.

As a further nod to modernity, alongside traditional paper menus, tablets are also brought to the table displaying images of the food for you to peruse.

Boasting some refreshing and healthy juices (as well as some less some less so, hello, Oreo and Snickers milkshakes), the menu also stays true to its heritage, offering namlait, karak and local coffees.

If you’re new to Emirati cuisine, Treej is a great entry point. The eatery serves up a multitude of dishes including paratha wraps, Emirati burritos, machboos laham (lamb with yellow rice) chebab pancakes and luqaimat (those super-sweet mini doughnuts).

Emirati spices can be found marinating many of the dishes. Don’t miss the fouga salmon. Served with biryani rice, it’s packed with flavour. The Mattai salad is crunchy, clean and sweet, lifted by a mix of Bahraini crackers.

However, there are also plenty of international dishes on the menu, too, catering for all diets. A guacamole vegan sandwich is delicious – packed with a medley of veg and roasted aubergine in a brick-sized ciabatta. It’s hearty and filling (yet still helping you with your five-a-day quota).

Set close to the beach, this family-friendly location serves up wholesome and delicious food and is sure to fulfil those hunger pangs while taking an Emirati cultural ride along the way.
Open Sun-Wed 9am-11pm, Thu-Sat 9am-midnight. Unlicensed. La Mer, Jumeirah 1 (04 323 9444).
