Street-facing dining in City Walk can get rather hectic if you’re looking to have a quiet, cosy morning. Not this time though, as RUE 71’s French patisserie’s vibes make us feel like we’re stepping straight into a very welcoming European street corner café.
We walk into the cute, smallish tearoom-style setting and go for the white and blue wicker seating outdoors rather than the darker, modern inside. First up, we go for what sounds like a massive breakfast. It’s not. Though we get sausages, cold baked beans, a runny egg, beef bacon, potatoes and toast – they’re served in what can only be described as the tiniest skillet in the world.
Things pick up with the chicken and avocado sandwich, even though doesn’t come in sourdough bread as mentioned. Not in a healthy “good” way, but a fried-cheese-filled “we’re stuffed” kind of situation, which we can’t complain about.
Sweet tooth? Try the Nutella French toast – a soaked brioche served with butterscotch and vanilla ice cream. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and worthy of another visit to RUE 71 and its cheerful, swift servers, despite other slight letdowns.
Open Sun-Wed 8.30am-midnight, Fri-Sat 8.30am-12.30pm. Unlicensed. City Walk, Al Safa Street (04 3461222).
