With some of the UAE’s most popular family restaurants opening their doors at The Dubai Mall, the shopping centre has turned into quite the destination for foodies. Walnut Grove is one of the latest additions to the mall’s extensive list.

We head to the South African eatery with so much more on our minds than rainbow cakes. With a magnificent view of The Dubai Fountain outdoors and the Waterfall indoors, Walnut Grove’s signature gold-and-grey interiors are anything but boring.

It’s a second branch in Dubai for the chain, alongside City Walk, where it’s famous for its giant cakes. As with the City Walk menu, this one s packed full of classics, from burgers to pasta and avocado toast.

Starting off with one of the “famous” salads (it says so on the menu), we go for the burrata. Super fresh and creamy, the cheese sits happily on top of a generous bed of mixed greens.

It’s unfortunate that the vinaigrette dressing is a bit bitter and overpowering. Similarly, in the scampi rolls, the de-shelled prawn meat is overshadowed by the sweet chilli Sriracha mayonnaise, although the seeded mini slider buns balance things out.

Next up, we order the beef fillet trio, and it’s cooked perfectly as per our order. It’s juicy and topped with sweet potato shavings for some crunch. The beef jus and salsa verde are perfect for a quick dip, but the African chakalaka and Peppadew pesto lack a bit of flavour. The side mashed potatoes are a tad plain, too, and the mixed-in biltong nowhere to be found.

Of course we’re here for the desserts to, so we get a slice of coconut cake.

It’s served with Maltesers and some Raffaelos scattered around,  but the icing, well, takes the cake.

Walnut Grove’s Dubai Mall branch has a charming family-friendly setting, for a post- or pre-mall pit-stop, though it needs to up its game in terms of dishes to compete with other mall spots.
Open daily 9am-11pm. Unlicensed. The Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai (04 344 4441).
