The new family-friendly eatery at Dubai Marina Mall

Some of Dubai's Mall eats aren’t simply meals that you’ll have on the go before heading to the supermarket or on the way home from school with the kids – they’re much more than that.

tashas Marina Mall is a prime example of what we’re referring to here, as its standards when it comes to food and service surpass what you might expect from in-mall dining.

With a few tables inside the mall for those who need to grab a coffee or smoothie, a glass partition separates the area from the indoor and outdoor seating. Décor is simple, with wooden chairs and a hint of luxury, as chandeliers with embossed lashings of fabric reflect golden undertones on a plentiful display of cakes, fruit baskets and more.

The outdoor area overlooks charming views of the Marina, with passersby occasionally sneaking a look into the venue for a glimpse of the elaborate offerings gracing diners’ tables.

The spot comes from restrateur Natasha Sideris, the name behind other succesful tashas cafés, as well as restaurants including Flamingo Room by tashas and the newly-opened Avli in DIFC, so we have high hopes.

Opting for the famous veg on toast, our village bread arrives topped with mountains of the good stuff. Black mushrooms solidify the taste with a distinct earthiness, while creamy feta adds some needed tanginess along with the heirloom tomatoes. Kale pesto, pea shoots and rocket keep the carb factor in check – this is a healthy dish.

We put the kitchen’s meat-cooking skills to the test (just in case they thought we were vegetarians) too. We order the fillet steak and it’s 250g of juicy goodness on a plate.

Our doubts over the separately charged black pepper and mushroom sauce quickly disappear as we realise that it’s no ordinary drizzle.

Not only does it go perfectly with the beef, but it’s also incredible with the boiled baby potatoes. Far from boring, they are more pan-fried than anything else, and oh-so-buttery with barely-crisped skin.

Next up, a very sweet ending with a magnificient fruit salad, filled with a mix of exotic fruits including physalis and star fruit, plus plump raspberries, blueberries and glorious figs.

Ah, now for the coffee. We ask if they have soy milk, to which the friendly server promptly answers “of course, we have everything at tashas”. Hear, hear.
Open daily 8am-11pm. Unlicensed. Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai (04 458 5611).
