Wijnand van Till, a 34-year-old management consultant originally from Holland and a Dubai resident of three years, says his interest in photography was inspired by his travels. ‘My wife and I met in Gabon, and together we share a passion for Africa,’ he explains. ‘We’ve been very lucky to have seen so many special places and the most incredible animals. After each trip, I wanted to share my experiences: that’s what got me into photography.’ It just so happens that Wijnand has a special talent for the art – a talent that has now won him an award in a National Geographic contest, taking first prize in the landscape category in the magazine’s Netherlands edition. The same snap was the winner for the UAE in a recent Gulf Photo Plus competition.
Will his life change after these accolades? ‘The exposure of my photo work will increase, which will hopefully lead to me getting more assignments,’ he says. Wijnand also plans to share his work online via his website, www.vantill.org
, and is currently working on a photo book about the Middle East.
His top tip for aspiring Dubai photographers? ‘Always have your camera with you: the most interesting opportunities are often unexpected.’
Dubai in clouds
‘This photo was taken on an Emirates flight from Lagos to Dubai, and under perfect circumstances: a clear sky at high altitude, clean windows and an amazing view of Dubai through the clouds. It’s the shot I’ve been waiting for for so long…’
