The drama teacher
Emily Madghachian is director and founder of Kids’ Theatre Works!
What skills do they learn?
By participating in a drama class, kids automatically enhance their skills in communication, concentration, decision-making, risk-taking (by trying different things, failing perhaps and then trying something new, again and again), relationships and team-building, as well as, of course, performance. From all of this, their confidence and self-belief grows in bounds! Kids come away feeling listened to, accountable and responsible.
How old do you have to be to take part?
Our classes start as young as three years of age with Teeny Drama 1. This is a creative drama class that taps into their imaginations, and where there is no pressure to perform.
Is it suitable for everyone?
Yes. We have the full range of students at Kids’ Theatre Works! – from the very talented and confident to the introverted and shy. Each of our students goes away with new found knowledge about their craft or themselves and a greater sense of self-esteem.
Is it a pricey hobby?
This is a question I find hard to answer! Depending on the age of a child and the type of class they are in, term fees range from approximately Dhs1,100 to Dhs2,700 per term. Hiring theatres and studio spaces in Dubai isn’t cheap, but at Kids’ Theatre Works we choose to offer our classes in state-of-the-art facilities. As of Autumn 2011 we’ll be operating a ‘Theatre Angels’ scheme – inviting corporations and individuals to contribute towards our operating costs so that we can keep them covered without having to pass them on to our clients. This will help reach us out to lower income families as well as to continue to put on our fabulous showcases every year.
