If all the Valentine’s Day goings on in the city prove just too much for you, take the short trip out of Dubai to Blue Marlin and enjoy some intelligent house music and a cool beach party. There won’t be any crooners here; the house tunes will be supplied by wAFF and Robert James – two of the UK’s hottest talents.
Members and reservations only. Feb 14. 1pm-11pm. Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, Ghantoot (056 113 3400).
Italian-American gangsters are not known for being soppy, so if you find yourself in TECOM you’ll be delighted to hear that you’ll encounter a specially planned anti-Valentine’s night executed for single people who absolutely detest organised romancing. It’s just a shame the footie’s not on because it’s a good spot to catch the match.
11am-3am. Ramee Rose Hotel, TECOM, Dubai (04 450 0111).
The Irish Village
Irish hospitality can be a great leveller we reckon. The CEO of a company can find themselves clinking glasses with a builder at this infamous Garhoud watering hole and the sense of egalitarianism can certainly be applied to couples. Quietly whispering sweet nothings in your partner’s ear won’t get you far in this hangout, as your expressions are likely to be completely drowned out by the storming house band’s rock covers and DJ Marky Mark.
Sun-Wed 11am-1am, Thu-Sat 11am-2am. Dubai Tennis Stadium, Garhoud (04 239 5000).
Head to Meydan Racecourse on Valentine’s Day and if you’re single you’re more than likely to bump into some kindred spirits. The club’s Heartbreakers Unite event is promising to create an atmosphere that’s devoid of ‘cheesy candle-lit dinners’ and instead encourages participants to band together, dance and party. Apparently, any Valentine’s blues will not be tolerated and in such a spectacular outdoor venue, with incredible views all the way out to the Burj Khalifa, as well as top DJs, what’s not to like?
Free (reservations required). 10pm-3am. Grandstand rooftop, Meydan Racecourse, Nad Al Sheba (050 443 0933).
Story Rooftop Lounge
Being single doesn’t mean you have to head to a tired bar to toast your liberated relationship status, you could get on down to a bar that’s got funky, street art decor, good music and a sleek modern feel. And in keeping with its cool ethos, Story is dealing with the nasty problem of chocolate boxes, flowers and candlelit suppers the cool way – simply rising above the masses and sticking to what it does best. In this particular case – regular bar nights.
Open daily 5pm-3am. Story Rooftop Lounge, behind Zayed University. Dubai Media City (050 151 4308).
With its cool, urban interior and excellent daily happy hour between 6pm and 9pm, Barzar makes a lot of sense if you’re looking to escape Cupid’s arrow. Unfortunately, there’s an outdoor terrace with some of the best views of the Burj Al Arab in the city. Yes, this is somewhat romantic but fear not – head there after brunch on a Friday and you’re likely to bump into a decent party. But most importantly, while icky couples languish in doe-eyed contentment at one of the city’s many romantic nightspots, Barzar will be offering the best solution – by doing nothing.
Sat-Wed 4pm-2am, Thu-Fri 4pm-3am. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 366 6197).
