Butter chicken burrata pizzetta at Masti Possibly the most unusual entry on this list is housed at this contemporary Indian fusion restaurant at the super happening hotspot of La Mer. Masti somehow brings together a traditional Italian pizza, topped with burrata, which is then generously smothered in butter chicken. It’s deceptively moreish – and if you head along to Masti on a Monday you can get some free drinks and enjoy some live jazz, too. A far cry from an average bag of salt and vinegar. Dhs75. Open Sat-Wed noon-midnight; Thu-Fri noon-2am. La Mer, Jumeirah 1 (04 344 4384).
Chopped sausages at The Irish Village While its name might not sound like haute cuisine, these little bite-sized treats are the perfect accompaniment to a cold pint. Our Pub of the Year, dishes up these succulent little bangers alongside (perhaps rather incongruously) a sweet chilli mayo dip. Dunk away, people. Dhs49. Open Sun-Thu 11am-1am; Fri-Sat 11am-2am. Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, Garhoud (04 239 5000).
Classic nachos at Lock, Stock & Barrel Anything that comes as a side but comfortably feeds four is alright in our books. Especially if it comes with two different kinds of cheese, sour cream, jalapeños, guacamole and salsa. These megac nachos pack a punch (even more so if you add extra chilli for Dhs15). Dhs65. Grand Millennium Dubai, Barsha Heights (04 514 9195); Rixos Premium Dubai, JBR (04 392 7120).
Guinea fowl sausage roll at folly by Nick & Scott This may well be Dubai’s most charming restaurant and bar, and if the sprawling views out from the terrace over Madinat Jumeirah’s waterways aren’t enough, this delightful bar bite takes it a step further. The Guinea fowl sausage roll is baked with a perfect golden hue, and is paired with a quaint little barbecue dipping pot on the side. A sophisticated slant on a pub grub classic. Dhs45. Open Sun-Thu noon-2.30pm, 7pm-11pm, Fri-Sat 12.30pm-3.30pm, 7pm-11pm. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqiem (04 430 8535).
Halloumi fries at Axe House Possibly, and probably, the biggest contender for the “How have we lived so long without these?” award (that’s not a real thing, by the way), these halloumi fries are one of the best, most deliciously awesome side dishes you’ll find in town. Topped with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds, a drizzle of yoghurt dip and a few fresh herbs, you’re in for a totally brilliant bar bite. Dhs42. Open daily noon-2am. Armada BlueBay Hotel, Cluster P, JLT (04 399 9577).
Jalapeños Loca at Loca While early 2018 may have seen us say goodbye to Loca 2.0 in Souk Al Bahar, the Dubai original is going strong on the Jumeirah coast, and that’s probably in good part down to these bad boys. Jalapeños peppers, rolled in crushed tortilla chips and stuffed with Oaxaca cheese (which is somewhere between a Monterey Jack and mozzarella). Then it’s deep fried. Order them up with a serving of the famous Loca guacamole, made tableside, and thank us later. Dhs57. Open daily noon-2am. Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, Jumeirah 1 (04 346 1111).
Lobster roll at The MAINE Oyster Bar and Grill Over at this classy bar and seafood restaurant in JBR, you can get your hands on a beautifully tender lobster roll, prepared the traditional way from Maine, on the North Eastern US coast, itself. And with some homemade “chips” (crisps) on the side, there are few better ways for seafood fans to warm up ahead of a full meal. Book a table for later, and don’t miss the shrimp linguine. Dhs112. Open Sat-Wed noon-midnight, Thu-Fri noon-1am. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Dubai – Jumeirah Beach, The Walk, JBR (04 457 6719).
Mozzarella sticks at Perry & Blackwelder’s If it’s deep-fried cheese then it’s instantly got our backing (as you might have gathered by this list so far). These mighty mozzarella bites are an enduring classic on this American eatery’s hearty menu – and with a satisfying crunch and an even more satisfying deluge of stringy, cheesy goodness with every bite, you can’t go wrong. Dhs47. Open daily noon-2am. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim (04 432 3232).
Sourdough pizzas at The Social Room You may be inclined to consider this one more than a snack (you can always share) and for us these gorgeously soft-crusted pizzas are one of the perfect accompaniments to some chilled-out drinks at the sister bar to Marina Social. We’re particular fans of the pulled lamb, pesto and chargrilled courgette version. Dhs75. Open daily 6pm-11.30pm. InterContinental Dubai Marina (04 446 6664).
