Ever wanted to live the life of Kevin McCallister and stay at one of the Big Apple’s finest establishments? If so, your dreams could soon come true.
New York’s Plaza Hotel, which made a fine appearance in Home Alone 2, has just been bought by a Dubai-based investor, and he wants to bring the brand to the UAE.
Shahal Khan has said the company aims to expand to either Dubai or Abu Dhabi by 2020.
He told Arabian Business: “The Plaza is very unique, but has never been made into a global brand.”
“I'm looking for a place – maybe China, maybe even one in Europe – but I thought it might be good to make the only other one in Abu Dhabi or Dubai."
The iconic hotel first opened its doors back in 1907 in Central Park, New York.
The 20-storey building is decked out in luxury, including a crystal chandelier in the lobby and everything from chair legs to mirror frames fitted with 24-carat gold.
The building has welcomed celebrities from the Beatles to Christian Dior, and has been the backdrop for many cultural works like The Great Gatsby, Eloise at the Plaza and, of course, our favourite little prankster Kevin McCallister.
The hotel will formally change hands on June 25, and plans will be made from there.
With Khan expecting to be opening a Plaza in the UAE by 2020, we can’t wait to do our own version of Home Alone.
This isn’t the only luxury resort due to set up in the not-so-distant future, as Austrian beach resort Vienna House will be coming to Deira Islands, too.
