A rare breed of tortoise has a new home at The Green Planet

The Green Planet has stepped in to help an abandoned tortoise.

While a tortoise carries around his home on his back, sometimes that's just not enough to keep him safe.

So those kind folk at The Green Planet have taken the little guy under their wing and provided him with somewhere warm and safe to live.

As part of its drive to create awareness about animal welfare, Dubai's indoor tropical biodome has welcomed an exotic Sulcata Tortoise into its fold after finding him lost in Dubai.

The 31kg male was discovered wandering along the side of a road in the UAE, which must have come as a shock to motorists.

Taking swift action, a group of animal-lovers called the experts at The Green Planet to come and rescue the abandoned reptile.

Thankfully, after undergoing a series of medical tests, the little guy appears to be in good condition.

The Sulcata Tortoise (the world's third largest species of tortoise) is not native to the UAE and some are not suited for the intense desert heat, which is detrimental to their health, however, thebiologists at The Green Planet are currently providing him with a suitable diet containing all the necessary vitamins and minerals, along with access to veterinary care to ensure he is nursed back to prime health.

Although the species is not native to Australia, you can find the newest addition to The Green Planet family relaxing with the kookaburras in The Australian Walkabout on the lower level, which is the best environment for his unplanned arrival.
