Adding to Jumeirah’s burgeoning quirky café scene is Sketch Art Café at Mattar bin Lahej Gallery where kids and adults alike can channel their inner Monet – and slurp up a latte, or hot chocolate, at the same time.

On entering the converted villa, you turn left to the café area, turning right takes you to the art studio where regular workshops are held for little artists and mums and dads too.

The all-day menu is extremely short and simple. A pictorial list – we wouldn’t expect anything less in an art gallery – of coffees include a couple of more adventurous options such as the Spanish latte and the Turkish coffee alongside the normal cappuccino and espresso varieties, while a selection of breakfast and herbal teas are amongst the other hot drinks.

Kids can choose between a babycino or a coco shot, which is super sweet, warm hot chocolate with wafer straws served with a spoon, so little ones can fish out the mini marshmallows – and make a mess while they are at it!

You probably aren’t going to go here for the food alone.

Only one breakfast option – an acai bowl, which is exactly as it should be with fresh strawberries, blueberries and banana plus a sprinkling of granola to add some crunch – is on the menu.

Otherwise, take your pick from seven desserts. Don’t miss the chocolate brownies, which are moist, rich and lip-lickingly good.

While at Sketch Café you’re encouraged to illustrate paper coffee cups. The staff bring one cup per person to the table, but if you need more (because one child scribbles on the other child’s cup and a fight breaks out for example) they are Dhs1.

Give it your best shot as they choose the most impressively designed ones to add to the paper coffee cup hall of fame display.
Coffee, cupcakes and a splash of creativity – tick.
