Your distance learning questions in Dubai answered

As parents and students across the UAE prepare for a complete change to their usual routines, we ask Ramesh Mugdal, Principal, Global Indian International School (GIIS) in Dubai, what we can expect.

What is home learning and how will it work?
Home learning has always been a part of student’s learning even during the regular days of schooling.

Usually extended learning is assigned to students to broaden their understanding and skill sets in key subjects. The same practice shall continue in the changed circumstances as well.

What about for children who have exams coming up?
For exams, schools shall do the best they can by either holding online assessments or by considering the results of earlier assessments.

Students and parents can be assured that closure of schools is unlikely to affect the overall performance of the students in terms of their achievements and results.

What should parents be doing to support their children during this time?
Parents are advised to refer to the communication from their individual school regarding home learning.

Schools may opt for online tools to deliver live lessons remotely and parents will need to support their kids by ensuring that they are provided with the devices and necessary connectivity.

It is desirable that parents prepare a simple, easy to follow timetable for their children so that they stay in touch with all key subjects even when they are home daily. GIIS has already initiated virtual classrooms in which at specified times, students join on an online platform for live interactive sessions remotely which are as effective as when students are in regular classrooms.

What does it mean for the students?
Kids follow the directions given by the school and attend any of the virtual classes organised and submit the assignments remotely for feedback and improvement.

The best way ahead is to maintain a time table for themselves in consultation with their parents so that they stay focused on all school subjects during the day and also have sometime for recreation as any other day.
