Kid's fashion week, Thomas the Tank Engine and more

Thursday July 28

EDITOR’S PICK FREE! Don’t miss Kid’s Fashion Week at Deira City Centre
Don’t miss a raft of mini fashion shows performed by Dubai’s little super models. The actual shows are scheduled to take place every day until July 31. In addition, kids can also join in the ‘Create Your Look’ Workshop and create a fashion item with the accessories available, with the best creation in each category winning a great prize!
Free. 3pm-10pm daily. Deira City Centre.

Cool off in the pool with munchies and movies in the moonlight
What better way to start the weekend than with a communal family movie at the Polo Club? Tonight’s line-up is Up screening at 7pm, followed by Toy Story 3 at 9pm.

Brunch bunnies ahoy!
The Mövenpick Hotel in Deira is running a family brunch every Friday throughout August. There’s a supervised kid’s corner full of activities for little ones, including learning games, bouncing balls, a drawing area and much more. Relax with the family and enjoy the international buffet in Jigsaw restaurant. There is also the option to brunch in Wok, which serves a mouthwatering array of Asian cuisine.
Dhs119-149 (adults) Dhs50 (kids aged 7-12) and children under six go free. 12.30pm-4pm. Mövenpick Deira (800 33472).

Saturday 30

Pop out for a sneaky Snog
Don’t worry – it’s not as salacious as it sounds. It is however, a delicious and very healthy way to indulge in a frozen dessert. Made with prebiotics, organic milk, natural sweeteners (Agave nectar), and served with all manner of healthy fresh berries, we’re firm fans. If your kids aren’t quite so much into fruit, they can always get a chocolate brownie topping instead though. Nice – and not that naughty!
From Dhs16 per serving. Daily 10am-midnight. Mirdif City Centre,

Sunday 31

FREE! Thomas the Tank show at Mirdif City Centre
Bust our buffers! Thomas and Friends never fail to delight children of all ages, and this performance will be no exception. In this tale, Thomas saves Diesel from yet another misadventure, and is rewarded for his bravery with a trip to visit the new Sodor Search and Rescue Center. But he gets separated from the ship and ends up alone and stranded on the mysterious Misty Island. Cinders and ashes! This is not to be missed…
Free. Mirdif City Centre,

Monday August 1

Ramadan is likely to start today
Don’t forget that today is most probably the first day of the 30-day Holy Month. That means most daytime events will change their timings (so be sure to call first before you embark on an excursion), and don’t forget to respect the laws of the land. That means no eating or drinking in public for parents, and children should practice discretion too (although Muslim children are not required to fast until the age of puberty). Check out the Sheikh Mohammed Centre of Cultural Understanding website for more details,

Tuesday 2

EDITOR’S PICK Pony up to the polo club for a guided tour
Get a guided tour around the stables at the Arabian Ranches Polo Club. Meet all the long-faced residents; learn about their training and tips on how to care for them. Make sure you bring a pocket full of Polomints or sugar lumps for extra brownie points. After the two-hour tour, take a break and put your feet up as you eat a delicious breakfast at Epona Café.
Dhs195 (for adults) Dhs100 (for kids aged 4-12), 8am-10am, Sat-Thu. Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, (04 361 8111).

Wednesday 3

EDITOR’S PICK Enjoy an Emirati Iftar
Ramadan may include some serious fasting during daylight hours, but once the sun sets, you can indulge in all manner of traditional Eastern dishes at one of the many Iftars being held across the city. We especially like the established Al Boom Tourist Village, which boasts a Ramadan Iftar buffet of over 200 Middle Eastern dishes. Take the kids along for a treat. They’ll love the eating late experience. Yummy!
Dhs130 (adults) Dhs65 (children) kids under five eat for free. Al Boom Tourist Village, next to the Grand Hyatt (04 324 3000).
