Family fun in Dubai

Julia Donaldson show at the Madinat and more things for kids to do

Wednesday 20

Go shopping for UAE Mother’s Day
It’s UAE Mother’s Day tomorrow, so plan a day of pampering for your mum. If you’re stuck for ideas, The Spa at The Address Dubai Marina offers several Mother’s Day pampering packages: we particularly rate the Mummy and Me, in which a mum and daughter can enjoy a raft of treatments.
Dhs1,200. Open daily 10am-10pm. Until May 31. The Spa, The Address Dubai Marina, (04 436 7424).

Thursday 21

Head to the cinema to see
The Croods Surviving in a volcanic world is tough enough, but caveman Grug (Nicolas Cage) gets a rude awakening when an earthquake forces him to leave behind the only world he knows. With his family in tow, he ventures out into the volatile world in search of a new home. With a stroppy teenage daughter as well as crazy grandma, the great trek to their new life was never going to be simple. Parents will like the grown-up humour, while kids will go bonkers for the colourful adventure.
At cinemas across Dubai.

Friday 22

Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship and Fair
See incredible purebred Arabian horses as they showcase their beauty and agility at this three-day championship. There are plenty of heritage aspects too, including falcon displays. Now in its tenth year, the show is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai and UAE minister of finance.
Free. 11am-9pm. Until March 23. Dubai International Convention Centre, DIFC, (04 308 6659).

Brunch at St Moritz
Build up an appetite on a Friday morning by spending three hours on the slopes at Ski Dubai bonding with your family (and practising your snow ploughs). Afterwards, head to St Moritz for a weekend family brunch at the après-style carvery, all for the bargain price of Dhs200 per person. To book your brunch, first purchase your ski-pass tickets at the Ski Dubai ticketing counter. You will then be given the brunch voucher.
Dhs200 per person. 11am-2pm. Ongoing. Ski Dubai and St Moritz, Mall of the Emirates, (04 409 4090).

Saturday 23

Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales
Book your tickets for this fun production of British writer Julia Donaldson’s best-loved tales, including Tiddler, Monkey Puzzle, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze. Little ones will see a show that explores under the sea, on the farm, into the jungle and more. Expect lots of live music and puppetry – perfect for those aged three and up.
Dhs135 per person. 10.30am, 2pm and 4.30pm. First Group Theatre, Madinat Jumeirah, (04 366 6546).

World Down Syndrome Day Walk
To support World Down Syndrome Day, join Dubai-based group All 4 Down Syndrome on this fun walk at Safa Park to raise awareness of the condition. We hear there’ll be plenty of balloons for kids and water for everyone, and participants will get a T-shirt to commemorate the occasion. Register your participation online first.
Free. 4.30pm. Gate 4, Safa Park, Jumeirah, (050 880 9228).

Sunday 24

Make jewellery at the Damas store in KidZania
Creative kids can learn about the jewellery and gem trade by taking part in the activities laid on by the new Damas outlet in KidZania, which opened earlier this month. There’s also the theatre workshops, the art school and the beauty school to try. Meanwhile, active boys can race on the Formula One track, fly an Emirates plane, join the fire brigade and more.
Dhs95-130 per child; free for kids under two. Open Sun-Wed 9am-10pm, Thu 9am-midnight, Fri-Sat 10am-midnight. Ongoing. KidZania, The Dubai Mall, (04 448 5222).

Monday 25

Bird’s eye views from the cable car
The perfect afternoon activity, Creek Park’s cable car ride is a 30-minute treat for little ones and visiting relatives alike. Get a fantastic view of the park’s manicured gardens while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of Dubai Creek. The trip also provides some great photo opportunities. The ride takes you all the way from Garhoud Bridge to the Floating Bridge, and the kids will love the fact that they get to dangle over the afternoon highway traffic. Note: there’s no A/C in the cars, and it can get rather sweaty.
Dhs25 per person. Open daily 10am-11pm. Ongoing. Creek Park, near Garhoud Bridge (04 336 7633).

Tuesday 26

Scale the Sky Trail at Playnation
Kids with heaps of energy will love this daring climbing activity, suspended nine metres in the air above Magic Planet. Using a series of ropes and rope ladders, the trail has various challenges to overcome. Once you’ve tackled that, how about a spot of climbing on the specially designed wall?
Sky Trail Dhs70; climbing wall Dhs50; combo ticket Dhs100. Open daily 9am-1am. Ongoing. Playnation, Mirdif City Centre, (800 386).
