Family fun in Dubai

Sky Trail, family brunch, pre-school story time and more

Wednesday 3

Head to Bowling City at Dubai Festival City
Featuring 12 lanes, kids as young as four are welcome to play – practice lanes with buffers are available to help them boost their confidence and skill. Sun-Wed 10am-4pm Dhs10 per person per game; 4pm-midnight Dhs15 per person per game.
Thu-Sat Dhs20 per person per game. Open Sat-Thu 10am-midnight, Fri 10am-1am. Festival Centre, Dubai Festival City, (04 232 8600).

Thursday 4

Jurassic Park 3D
One of the greatest family movies of the ’90s, Jurassic Park is back, only this time, the T-Rex is in scary 3D. Parents will love revisiting this film, starring Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Richard Attenborough, in which a rich professor decides to clone dinosaurs using the DNA he extracts from prehistoric mosquitoes embedded in fossilised amber. The perfect movie for your dino-mad nippers.
At cinemas across Dubai: read our review on page 75.

Friday 5

Picnic at the polo
Head to Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club every Friday for some fresh air and exciting action on the polo field: take the whole family for a picnic on the grass, and you can park your car next to the pitch for just Dhs100. It’s an inexpensive and fun way to enjoy the cool weather and get them running about outside.
Dhs100 per car. Fri 3.30pm until sunset. Ongoing. Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, Arabian Ranches, (04 361 8111).

Teach the kids to ice skate
Help them find their legs as soon as possible and they’ll be whizzing around the rink in no time at all, and hopefully managing to stay on their feet. Dubai Ice Rink offers special sessions for tots under 100cm tall that include ice time, skate hire and a protective crash helmet for Dhs55. That means your little munchkins will get two hours on the ice (enough to wear them out) and they’ll be able to keep the helmet, which is available in three colours, for their next trip to the rink. Helmets cost Dhs40 when purchased separately at the Skate Shop.
Dhs55 per child, including skate hire and helmet. Open daily 10am-10pm. Ongoing. Dubai Ice Rink, The Dubai Mall, (04 448 5111).

Saturday 6

Have brunch at Mazina
Enjoy a fabulous array of international cuisine and great food for the kids. Better still, there’s heaps of entertainment laid on to keep the little ones occupied, including a large bouncy castle, face painting, movies and games. The venue also has a Nintendo Wii for them to play with.
Dhs110-220 (free for kids under six). Sat 12.30-3.30pm. Mazina, The Address Dubai Marina (04 436 7777).

Scale the Sky Trail at Playnation
Kids with heaps of energy will love this daring climbing activity, suspended nine metres in the air above Magic Planet. Using a series of ropes and rope ladders, they have to make their way around the trail, which has various challenges to overcome. Once you’ve tackled that, how about a spot of climbing on the specially designed wall?
Dhs70 (Sky Trail); Dhs50 (climbing wall); Dhs100 (both). Open daily 10am-midnight. Playnation, Mirdif City Centre, (no number).

Sunday 7

Pre-school storytime at the Old Library
If your kids love a good story, book them into one of the free Sunday storytelling sessions at the Old Library at Ductac. The sessions run from 10am to 11.15am and are geared specifically towards pre-schoolers. Book ahead – spaces are limited.
Free. Sun 10.30am-11.15am. Ongoing. The Old Library. (03 341 4777 ext 207).

Monday 8

Cinema morning for mums
Treat yourself to a blockbuster movie while the kids are at school or nursery. For Dhs60, mums get a well-earned coffee and a muffin, plus a 20 percent discount voucher for either The Spa or Mazina at The Address Dubai Marina. It’s the perfect way to wind down after the weekend.
Dhs60. Mon from 11am. Reel Cinemas, Dubai Marina Mall, (04 449 1903).

Tuesday 9

Kids eat for free at Spur
Forgo the washing up and have supper at Spur with the kids. This family restaurant at Dubai Festival City serves traditional South African fare – think steaks, burgers and onion rings. Best of all, kids eat for free every Tuesday evening from 6pm.
Prices vary. Tue 6pm-10pm. Ongoing. Spur, Dubai Festival City, (04 232 8866).

Spring camp at Favourite Things
Little ones aged two to seven years old can enjoy a range of cool activities at the Favourite Things Spring Camp (two- to four-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult). Activities at the camp include cooking, arts and crafts, science experiments, drama and dance, magic shows and much more. Plus, you don’t have to book them in for a whole week if one day at a time suits you better.
Dhs125-155 (per day). Sun-Thu 9.30am-1.30pm until April 18. Favourite Things, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai Marina. (04 434 1984).
