Known for whipping new mums back into shape, Luke Gaffney from Explosive Fitness talks to Time Out Kids about the benefits of fitness bootcamp and why Buggy Fit is the next big thing.
What is Explosive Fitness?
Our aim is to try and make people change their outlook on fitness so it doesn’t just feel like another chore.
What kind of classes do you offer for parents?
There are many different sessions on offer for parents but the most popular are personal sessions where mums and dads can train together in the comfort of their own home. We understand how busy family life can be which is why we started offering at-home sessions. We also have weekly bootcamp sessions that take place early in the morning and late in the evening.
Do you cater to kids also?
I don’t work with kids individually at the moment but I have run successful Buggy Fit classes in the UK previously. Buggy Fit is an extremely popular interactive class where mums can socialise, get fit and bring the kids along with them. It will be arriving in Dubai at the end of the summer.
What is your advice for mums looking to get back into shape, but don’t know where to start?
I work with a lot of mums and I always tell them that Rome wasn’t built in a day. It’s quite common to feel unmotivated and overwhelmed by unwanted baby bulge, not to mention the pressure they are under to get back to their pre-baby weight. Everyone has to start somewhere and it’s always best to take a slow and steady approach in the beginning. When you have a good fitness and nutrition plan, coupled with motivational training sessions, nothing is unachievable.
Do you help with diet advice too?
Yes. The old saying; ‘abs are made in the kitchen’ is very appropriate when it comes to getting back into shape. You can train as much as you want, but if your diet and nutrition plan is not right it can have a negative effect. Education is crucial and through the nutritional qualifications I have gained, I help parents understand what good nutrition is.
What is the benefit of attending a group session?
Aside from the obvious fitness benefits, group sessions are a great way to meet new people, and they are especially beneficial for new mums or parents who have just moved to Dubai. The sessions are always fun with the knock on benefit of getting fitter and feeling healthier. I also arrange social events for before and after workout sessions, so everyone can kick back and properly enjoy the company of people they have been sweating beside week after week!
Many new mums might find group sessions intimidating. How do you get around this?
Some people find group sessions intimidating and can have the background thought of ‘what if I am not fit enough?’, ‘what if I come last?’ At our sessions I avoid competition so you can get out of the sessions exactly what you put into it, there is never a winner or a loser just a sense of personal achievement when you finish a session.
Do you offer personal training sessions also?
Yes, one-to-one sessions are often the best way of achieving results because the sessions are personalised to your goals and needs. It goes without saying that you get full undivided attention so ultimately there is no hiding! There is also a full nutritional program on offer, with regular consultations to tweak and adjust what’s working and what’s not working. I find variation is also important and keeps motivational levels high so I try and vary the sessions using a mix of traditional methods and new trends using new equipment.
Group sessions start from Dhs50 and personal training sessions from Dhs50. Bulk discounts are available for both. Bootcamp takes place every Tuesday at 7.30am and every Friday at 7am. Call 056 343 7238 or visit www.facebook.com/explosive-fitness-UAE
