Founder of Little Miss Cupcakes, cake artist Farah Rehman talks to us about sweet treats, party stations and three tiered cakes.

Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m from a little town near Toronto, Canada called Oakville where I spent the better part of my life growing up. While I mainly studied psychology in university, my passion was always design and dessert. I love cake artistry and feel blessed to be able to pursue my dreams of being a part of people’s lives in a “sweet” way. Getting married and moving to Dubai over the past year has led to many delicious adventures from late night snacking sessions with my husband to eating out at countless amazing restaurants in the UAE.

Where did the idea of Little Miss Cupcakes come from?
After I decided to take a break from studying, I started baking for fun. I made my first tiered wedding cake for a friend’s sister and was blessed with very promising reviews by those who tasted it; this gave me a lot of confidence to further explore my passion for cake design. I continued to make cakes for family and friends and eventually started to wholesale cupcakes to a quaint local café. Little Miss Cupcakes continued to grow mainly through word of mouth. I soon realised something I knew all along - that there was no end to celebrations such as birthdays and weddings. Someone would always be celebrating one milestone or another for the rest of my life and they would always need cake!

Have you always been passionate about baking?
Art was always in my heart and a passion for baking was always in my genes. I grew up with a mother who was always in the kitchen cooking or baking something for me and my 3 siblings. I was my mom’s little elf, always running to the fridge and pantry to gather ingredients and measure them out. I always wanted to be the one in charge with the bowl and mixer in my hands.

What kind of birthday service do you offer for kids in Dubai?
Aside from the themed birthday cakes and cupcakes, we have cake party stations for kids. They have the option of decorating cupcakes with their favourite icing and colourful sprinkles or creating their very own cake mix. For advanced little bakers we also provide mini cakes which they learn to cover and decorate with fondant. The kids can devour their personal treats right away or take them home. Party stations are customised according to parents themes and requirements and we provide all the tools and ingredients for each party station.

What’s the most popular birthday cake design?
Popular themes for girls are polka dots, ruffles, and bows paired with their favourite cartoons. Action figures or a favourite sport/activity is most popular among the boys. Gone are the days of 2D cakes; a stunning two or three tier cake (depending on the size of the party) has become a must for kids’ birthday parties these days!

Why has design become more important than ever nowadays?
When it comes to parties, the cake needs to look as good as it tastes. If it doesn’t, kids and parents won’t remember it; they will not come back for more or recommend the cake designer to their family and friends. I think everyone will agree that when you walk into a party, you judge the cake first by its appearance and second by its taste. This doesn’t mean taste comes second. I strongly feel both go hand-in-hand and so I try my very best to deliver great tasting beautiful cakes that become conversation pieces.

What makes you stand out from other cake companies in Dubai?
Making beautiful and great tasting cakes is just part of the package. One of the most valuable things I’ve learnt while living and working in Canada is our emphasis on great customer service. It’s about the experience and treatment you receive at Little Miss Cupcakes which starts from the initial meeting where we discuss concepts, designs, and colour schemes. Sketches and inspiration boards are sent out and interesting flavour combinations are discussed. After the event, I follow up with my clients to obtain feedback which I warmly welcome. My work is honest, refined, and every cake is made fresh from scratch tailored to my client’s desires.

Tell us about different services you offer
I specialise in bespoke cakes and cupcakes for all occasions; weddings, birthdays, baby and bridal showers and everything else! Brownie bites, cheesecake/cake pops, sugar cookies, mini cupcakes, and whoopie pies are the most popular items. They can be personalised, wrapped and tagged to match your theme as party favours. Instead of traditional centrepieces, I offer beautifully decorated cupcake bouquets to be placed at the centre of each table, or a Little Miss Cupcakes cupcake tree; beautifully decorated cupcakes attached with sparkly ribbons hanging from a tree.
