Steps star and mum of two, Lisa answers our questions.

When did you and your family move to Dubai?
We moved here at the start of 2011 after spending years of holidaying in Dubai. My husband and I were amazed by the growth of the city at the time and how still to this day, it is constantly growing and transforming.

How do you find family life here?
We love it! Dubai is a fantastic place to bring up a family, with its climate, outdoor lifestyle and safe family environment. For us, it’s hard to beat!

Are you still touring with Steps even though you have just opened a performing arts academy in Dubai?
Steps are taking a break following our last sell out UK arena tour so that we can have some family time and concentrate on our solo projects. We are all in regular communication and have some really exciting things in the pipeline!

When did the academy open?
We had our launch day on Saturday September 6th - we were thrilled with the turnout and we really enjoyed meeting everyone. After years of dreaming about opening an academy, we officially opened our DPA doors the following week!

What’s on offer for families and kids and what age range does it cater to?
We provide Performing Arts and Musical Theatre classes and workshops for ages 4-18 years. Our students are divided into age groups and so if you have two or more children, they can come to us at the same venue and at the same time. As we are based at the Meadows and Lakes Fitness First Community Clubs, members can use the gym and enjoy the swimming pools and facilities during their children’s time with us, so it benefits the whole family.

What makes it different to other music, dance and drama venues in Dubai?
Our students are being trained by the very best. We have qualified teachers and professional performers who have had first hand experience starring in lead roles in the UK’s prestigious West End, professionally dancing for the likes of Robbie Williams and Diana Ross, and touring globally in a successful pop group.

Are the classes competitively priced and are there membership options?
Our prices are very competitive. We offer sibling discounts and Fitness First members and EPC card holders can also enjoy a reduced rate.

What has the response been like so far from families here?
The response has been fantastic, we have been inundated with enquires and as a result spaces are filling up fast, limiting the availability left for our classes.

How involved are you and your family in the academy?
My husband Johnny and I are very hands on as we are passionate about performing and passing on our knowledge and experience to our DPA students.

Do you find it difficult juggling family life and work in Dubai?
It is a bit of a juggling act trying to balance work and family life but there are lots of busy working mums and dads out there and somehow we make it work!

What’s the best thing about raising a family here?
The best thing about raising a family here is that we have met some wonderful friends and we feel lucky to be able to give our children an amazing experience that will stay with them, and us, for life.
