Family life in Downtown Dubai

The Tebbit family tell us about family life in the sky high Dubai neighbourhood

Ali and Oliver Tebbit live in Downtown with their 16-month old son Henry. They’ve lived here since they arrived and love all the facilities in the area for kids.

How long have you been in Dubai?
Three and a half years.

What’s the best thing about bringing up your children in Dubai?
It’s great enjoying outdoor activities nearly all year round, more specifically going to the beach, lazing around the pool and taking our baby to the park.

How long have you lived in Downtown?
Since we arrived in Dubai - we may be moving soon though.

Why did you choose this neighborhood?
Having moved here from central London, it felt like the closest to London living as everything you might possibly need is right on your doorstep.

Did you have your kids in Dubai? If yes, where and how was the experience?
Yes, I had my son Henry in City Hospital. The overall experience was pretty good due to my fantastic gynecologist (Dr Elsa) and the wonderful midwives and nurses at the hospital.

Where does Henry go to school and why did you send them there?
Henry’s at Blossom Nursery Downtown because it was very close and it was recommended by several friends.

Have you found it easy to meet other mums here?
Yes, everyone is very friendly and inclusive round here.

What family-friendly facilities are nearby?
Pretty much everything you need, outdoor playgrounds, Burj Park, kiddy friendly pools, indoor soft play in Dubai Mall, great nurseries, doctors in Dubai Mall and all the kiddy shops you need!

Are you planning to stay put in Downtown?
We are looking at staying in Downtown or moving to a villa. It depends on the market.

What do you do in your free time away from the kids?
I work in a startup marketing agency, plus do personal admin. A spot of exercise and trying to keep up with friends in the UK.

Favourite things

Mother-child activity in Dubai
Swimming lessons with Baby Splash at Al Manzil Fitness First. Henry loves to be in the water. Plus Henry is always exhausted afterwards so he normally has a long lunch time nap which means I get a bit of free time!

Family hang outs in Dubai
We love going to the beach at the weekend, as Henry loves running and playing in the sand. We always grab something to eat from one of the kiosks and if we can get Henry to sit still we will walk along the new boardwalk.

I don’t have much time anymore but when I do, I enjoy socialising with friends, trying out new restaurants and going to concerts. We are like the outdoor cinema at Wafi and visiting art galleries.
