Born To Move Les Mills exercise for kids programmes hitting schools this term

Interview, Sports and Outdoor

Keeping our kids’ fit is an important task. So Time Out Kids caught up with Ashley Kairit, brand manager of Born To Move Les Mills at MeFitPro, for all the details of a fun new programme hitting schools this term.

Tell us about MeFitPro

MeFitPro works with fitness clubs and facilities, plus sporting retailers in the region, providing equipment, international training programmes, consultancy services and continuous instructor training. We are also recognised as the leading voice in the Middle East health and fitness industry through our representation and licensing of the Les Mills group fitness brand.

Tell us about the Born to Move programme
Les Mills Born To Move™ is designed to inspire young people to fall in love with movement. They can experience the satisfaction that comes from trying and mastering fundamental skills through the disciplines of dance, martial arts, plyometrics, core, and yoga.

Where did the idea to create a fitness programme for kids come from?
As Les Mills is the leading provider of group fitness, Born To Move™ draws on our decades of experience in music, movement, and motivation. Co-created with a panel of young people, these are fun, high-quality fitness classes where children, of all ages and stages of development, can have fun moving to music.

Will you be visiting lots of schools across Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
In September, Born To Move™ will be offered at Regent International School, Raffles World Academy, Raffles International School South Campus, Collegiate American School, Universal American School, Star International School and Swiss International Scientific School. Classes are also offered at The Club and Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi and Atlantis Kids Club and Kids HQ in Dubai.

What will kids get to do?
They will meet with their Born To Move™ teacher for 30-55 minute classes. They will learn new skills along the way using moves that they can master with ease that also switches on their motivation and sustains their interest.

What activities will they get involved in?
Children in our Early Years classes will enjoy using their imagination while developing body awareness, balance, and concentration skills.
In our School and Teens classes, kids will learn fundamental fitness skills through a variety of dance, martial arts, yoga, and games. They will have lots of fun!

How often will the programme take place?
Usually classes will take place once per week, per age group, per school.

How important is it to keep kids fit and healthy?
It’s extremely important to keep kids fit and healthy to combat childhood obesity. Approximately 20 percent of six to 10 year olds and 40 percent of 11 to 19 year olds in the UAE are overweight or obese. And worse, childhood obesity is directly linked to a series of abnormalities in adult life, such as high blood pressure, high blood fat, and irregularities in insulin levels, as well as an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

What are the favourite parts of the programme?
It is the most rewarding  experience, to witness a child go from a place of absolutely no interest in sports, and rather wanting to spend time in front of their iPad, to being an active and excited participant in classes. This sparkle in their eyes when they nail new choreography or try something they never thought they could do, is amazing!

What are the future plans for Born to Move?
Our goal is to get children excited about moving and to combat childhood obesity. Ideally, we want to bring this class to every school in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, get children active, and just follow the general Les Mills goal of creating a fitter planet.

Any additional details?
We are currently looking for new Born To Move™ teachers who are outgoing, motivating, and passionate about improving children’s health and fitness.
