Jodie Minto lives with her husband, Martin, and their two children Connor, nine, and Ruby, six, in the Jebel Ali Village area. The family have lived in the neighbourhood for seven years. Time Out Kids finds out what life is like for them living on the outskirts of town...

1 Why do you think Dubai is good for families?
Dubai has so much to do to keep families busy on weekends and having house help is definitely a luxury we don’t have back home in Australia. We also love all the travel opportunities Dubai presents as we are so close to other parts of the world.

2 Why did you choose this neighbourhood?
We are into our fourth year in the Al Muntazah Complex, Jebel Ali Village. We do like it here as it’s got a nice community feel. We chose Al Muntazah as it’s right next door to our children’s school. We love the swimming pool and club house restaurant where we can order dinner around the pool, or delivered at home. It’s like living in a holiday resort!

3 Have you found it easy to meet other mums?
Yes! My first phone call was to the ANZA (Australia New Zealand Association) playgroup. The ladies I met there were great and really helped me settle into Dubai. They also helped me find my way around the city. While many of the original mums have since moved on from Dubai, we still have some great friends living here thanks to being in that great playgroup.

4 What family-friendly activities are nearby where you live?
We love going to the beach or to our compound swimming pool. The kids’ sporting activities take up a good portion of our weekend as well. We like to go to Aquaventure a few times a year. We also all enjoy ten pin bowling at Ibn Battuta Mall.

5 What cafès are nearby?
Our favourite local cafès are Carluccio’s at Ibn Battuta, Shakespeare’s at Marina Mall and Lime Tree Cafe in Al Quoz.

6 Is there a play park?
We love going to the park. Our favourite is Zabeel Park. We love the big open green space, plus the markets on the weekend.

7 What are your favourite family hang-outs?
Ripe Market on a Friday, where I work at my pop-up shop. We also love going to Kite Beach, or going to see a movie at the cinema.
