Be a fussy picker
Good carving starts with the right pumpkin, so choose one that looks fresh, has a sturdy stem and no bruises, plus a flat bottom so it won’t roll.
Once you’ve carved the lid, an ice cream scoop is perfect for letting little ones loose on digging out the insides. Prepare to get messy!
Sketch it out
Give the kids a felt pen to draw out the spooky faces on their pumpkins first, using their thumbs to rub them out until they’re happy with the final design.
Carving is easier with the pumpkin on your knee and you can send the kids off to scour for cool props such as twigs for hair or bendy straws for glasses, while you get stuck in.
Make it smell good
Sprinkle a little powdered cinnamon inside before you light it so it gives off that delicious scent of homemade pumpkin pie. Mmmm!
