Lisa Hume interview

Grade 4 teacher at Collegiate American School

Education

Where did you go to school?
Sylvan Avenue Elementary School, Bayport, New York.

What was your favourite subject?
Mathematics. I am a visual learner and numbers from a young age just made perfect sense to me.

Were you good or naughty?
Naughty when it came to Show and Tell. I had a reputation for sharing very bizarre items my mother didn’t know about – part of my dog’s cut-off tail, a live bat in a glass jar. The list goes on!

What’s the naughtiest thing you did?
I wrote a note in Math class and it got intercepted by Mr Braze. He started to read it in front of the class and I was so embarrassed. Let’s just say my note-passing career was put on hold...

What’s your happiest memory from your school days?
My third grade teacher is the reason I became a teacher. Mr Tobi was a magical teacher who filled his classroom with dice, decks of cards, newspapers and grocery receipts instead of text books. He was a wonderful influence.
