Beat Sommer interview

Principal at Swiss International Scientific School

Where did you go to school?
I went to kindergarten, primary school and high school in Zurich, Switzerland.
What was your favourite subject?
English, although I don’t really recall why exactly. It must have had something to do with my love for The Beatles, my passion for Manchester United and my admiration of Churchill.
Were you good or naughty?
If you asked my 95-year-old mother this question, she would definitely confirm that I was a generally good and very happy child, sometimes day-dreaming, but mostly very engaged and committed, especially with regard to any activities outside school life.
What’s the naughtiest thing you did?
I once sold firecrackers to one of my classmates, who burnt them in our classroom during lunch break and threw them behind the blackboard. Unfortunately, the explosion unhinged the whole blackboard and I was reprimanded to do social duty in the school.
What’s your happiest memory from your school days?
That I was able to live my passion for sports, and, in particular, competitive rowing.
