You’ll be familiar with the scenario; you’re enjoying a day out at a theme park en famille when hunger strikes. Your offspring are suddenly peckish, verging on hanger (hunger-anger, you know the type), and you need to find some kind of sustenance, pronto. And preferably of the not-so-fast-food kind.
Step into the frame, Tom’s Kitchen Deli. The British chef’s new venture at the new Riverland Dubai at Dubai Parks and Resorts (also home to Legoland Dubai, Bollywood Parks and motiongate Dubai).
A theme park might not seem like the standard location for a Michelin-starred chef to set up culinary camp, but this is Dubai.
Aikens already has one outpost in the city – Pots, Pans & Boards at The Beach at JBR – but this second eatery has more of a family-friendly vibe and menu. “Dubai is the ideal spot to open our first international deli,” says Aikens. “The colourful and vibrant environment offers families a relaxing experience with delicious food.”
The menu sounds exciting and fresh, packed full of dishes, including salads (Caesar, Niçoise et al), wraps and paninis, as well as a range of kid-friendly treats (think candyfloss, cookies and brownies).
It’s this “Cod Dog” we have our eye on, however. An alternative to the usual hot dog, it’s essentially a fish-finger sandwich with a cooler name. The cod fish fillet comes in a brioche bun, with salad and optional tartar sauce. It’s tasty and, let’s face it, sure to appeal to Riverland-goers of any age.
