After the decadent holiday season, our wallets are a bit lighter, so a brunch for under Dhs100 is extremely appealing. That’s why we love the new brunch at BookMunch Café on Al Wasl Road, which is the perfect fusion of food and frugality. (Well, maybe not so frugal if the treat-laden table is anything to go by!)
The bright and airy space, with its bold, mismatched chairs and bookshelves helps to make brunch something that’s simple and fun again. We don’t miss the bouncy castles or balloon benders – instead, the kids take themselves off to the cute little reading tent that’s within sight of our table.
As soon as we arrive, we pour ourselves some fresh orange juice and survey the buffet that features delicious pastries, gourmet sandwiches of ciabatta bread filled with chicken or grilled vegetables, and smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels.
After feasting on some tart and crunchy granola, we turn our attention to the Mexican omelette, which has just the right amount of kick. We also share a huge platter of fresh and fluffy ricotta pancakes loaded with bananas and honey. Yum.
Meanwhile, our happy little book-lovers enjoy pasta and meatballs, and a mini burger from the children’s menu, all washed down with tiny bottles of cold milk and topped off with a chocolate chip cookie.
One of the lovely things about BookMunch is its child-friendly vibe. The kids can totter about and you can hear the sweet murmur of mums and dads reading to their enchanted tots. On our table, our two get busy writing their own stories with the crayons and paper we have brought, while we sit back, enjoying our lattes and casting our eyes on the many books on sale.
It’s lovely and simple, reasonably priced, and within easy reach of the beach. Hence why BookMunch’s brunch has become one of our favourites for families in Dubai.
Dhs95 (adults, including juice and one hot beverage), half price (kids under 12). Al Wasl Square, Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah (04 388 4066).
The bottom line
A well-priced, tasty meal in a lovely café that’s close to the beach.
