In case you hadn’t noticed, the city has been well and truly bitten by the art bug this month, thanks to Dubai Art Week. And if trawling the latest exhibitions, spotting the street art and generally soaking up creative culture has you wondering how to start your own collection – on a family budget – then look no further than Gallery One.
Founded in 2006 by designer Gregg Sedgwick and his photographer wife Jane, it’s a Dubai brand with 12 outlets. It started with a branch in Souk Madinat Jumeirah. But it’s the mini Gallery One store in The Ranches Souk that has our attention and is fast becoming the go-to place for unusual, stylish, locally-themed gifts and memorabilia.
Using regional artworks and themes, Gallery One designs many of its own products and sources stock from designers and artisans from around the world, as well as from the iconic Victoria & Albert Museum and Museum of Modern Art. The outcome is reminiscent of the retail stores in these large galleries and museums – colourful and full of creative suprises, which makes their stores as lovely to wander around as the gorgeously packaged products lining the shelves.
The Ranches Souk store provides a wide range of locally inspired stationery, greeting cards and creative gifts, and their plan is to open many more of these community-sized outlets bringing more wallet-friendly art to the homes across the region and beyond.
Open daily 9am-midnight. Level G, The Ranches Souk, Arabian Ranches 2 (04 425 9778).
