Kite Beach for families in Dubai

Why not sneak in a family day at Kite Beach before it gets too hot?

The seasons are somewhat topsy-turvy in this city, with winters spent enjoying the great outdoors and summers spent hiding at home with your best friend, the air-con. But, before we all lock ourselves away (or jump on a plane), we can enjoy a few last hours on one of the most beautiful and well-maintained beaches in the Gulf, which is teeming with activities and places to eat. Kite Beach is one of the Dubai community’s favourite spots to while away an afternoon, with active sporty types taking to the surf, busy toddlers building sandcastles, and a multitude of families after a relaxing day outdoors, but with all the modern conveniences they need within easy reach. These are our (currently open) favourite things about the sizzling hotspot…

Burn off some energy at the mammoth trampolines
Explore an obstacle course and climb high above the sandcastles at Wire World, where your brood can enjoy a jungle full of active fun for Dhs65. Or, why not try the “bungee injection” for Dhs35 for one jump? Tiny tots can also get in on the action with a special course just for them – the “acro branch junior” is Dhs35 and only for kids under 100cm.
Open Tue-Sat 9.30am-9.30pm, Sun-Mon 1.30pm-9.30pm. (04 559 4888).

Cool down with a healthy juice
There’s nothing quite like a cold drink on a hot day. Jamba Juice has a little stand with seating right where you can relax and enjoy a fresh, zingy juice for Dhs14 or Dhs24 for those who need a larger thirst quencher. With a juice and sandwich combo costing just Dhs35, that’s lunch sorted, then.

Get a coffee as the kids let loose in the playground
If the tots need a break from building sandcastles, take them to the small play area, which features a wooden house, climbing area and swings. It’s the perfect place for them to play “pirates”, while you enjoy a coffee from any of the many food and beverage outlets nearby.

Grab a sunbed and enjoy the view
Some people are happy with a towel on the sand, while still others are creatures of comfort and prefer to set up camp under a nice beach umbrella, on a comfy lounger. These are available up and down the beach, with prices averaging Dhs50 for a bed and Dhs50 for an umbrella. You can even get a little table for your area, so you don’t have to worry about sandy sandwiches!

Make a splash with some watersports
Paddleboarding, kayaking and water-skiing can turn a lazy day into something much more adventurous. Fun Beach Water Sports offers up a world of splashy fun for the whole family, and also provides donut and banana boat excursions that are sure to get you in the holiday mood.
Open daily 7.30am-6.30pm. (050 705 0433).

Walk on the fitness track
If you get there early enough, before the sun starts to sizzle, why not take a brisk walk on the Corniche? Feel free to cycle along the bike path that runs the length of Jumeirah Beach Road, starting just after the Jumeirah Beach Hotel (there are Byky hire stations if you don’t have your own two wheels), but you’ll have to chain it up before you get to Kite Beach.

Wipe out at the Skatepark
The XDubai Skatepark is always busy with kids big and small whizzing around its ramps. It’s a great place to hang out as the sun goes down. It will keep older kids entertained, and little ones aged four to ten can also enjoy safe skating from 8am to 11am
on weekends, too.
Open Sun-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat 8am-11pm.

Treat yourself to an ice cream sundae
A creamy dreamy ice cream will put some magic in the day. Enjoy every flavour imaginable as well as a decadent sundae, complete with a flake. A single scoop cone will cost you Dhs15 and a kiddie sundae Dhs25., (04 3791299).
