Spill The Bean review

Fresh and healthy food star on an interesting menu at this new family-friendly location

Spill The Bean review

There’s nothing we love more here at Time Out Dubai Kids than the opening of a new neighbourhood eatery. And when it’s the latest addition to one of Dubai’s coolest residential developments, The Sustainable City, we can’t wait to try it out for ourselves.

The menu is anything but ordinary at family-owned Spill The Bean café, which previously operated in Jumeirah. Pride is taken in serving up sugar-, wheat- and dairy-free delights for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Even the cakes are deliciously healthy (don’t worry, no sugar certainly doesn’t mean no taste at this joint). But can we convince the kids?

A portion of wholewheat vanilla pancakes with sliced banana, honey and hazelnuts are split between the two of them (everyone chooses from the same menu) and there’s more than enough to go around.

Hazelnuts hastily pushed to one side (we tried) and the fluffy stacks of goodness are gone within minutes. They are fresh and delicious, but could have benefited from more banana.

An espresso milkshake and skinny cappuccino (there’s a choice of three raw coffee blend options) are also excellent, and aid the rather early start for us.

We also love the wholewheat coconut French toast made with coconut milk and drenched in sticky honey and almond slivers. It’s simply scrumptious.

Mama’s egg sandwich, meanwhile, comprises a tasty veggie omelette with wholegrain toast. It’s delicious, though we’d prefer the veg cooked through the mixture rather than folded in at the end.

An icy cold date and banana smoothie tops off an entirely guilt-free breakfast and leaves us with a little smugness in our step for the rest of the day.

Spill The Bean is the perfect post-summer holiday brekkie option. You heard it here first.
Open daily 8am-8pm. Unlicensed. The Sustainable City (04 242 8671).
