Mrs Nicole Bishay interview

Grade 1 teacher from Clarion School

Where did you go to school?
I graduated with a High Honours undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. My masters in teaching is from Michigan State.

What was your favourite subject?
Languages and geography. I’d dream of all the places different languages were spoken. When I was 15, I convinced Mom to send me with the Spanish class to Costa Rica. I haven’t stopped since.

What was the naughtiest thing you did at school?
In first grade, my friend and I were waiting in the lunch line. When my friend got hers, she said, under her breath, “about time…!” and I decided to say it, too, louder. I was sent to the principal’s office; I was mortified! I learned to not follow blindly and stick with my own voice.

What was your greatest challenge at school?
Maths was always a challenge for me. But now, with the way my students are learning maths through hands-on tools, games and sharing their strategies, maths is my favourite subject to teach.
