Steps in UAE

We chat to Lisa Scott-Lee about Steps’ UK tour, ahead of their performance at Dubai Opera

We were properly devastated to have missed the UK Steps tour. In fact, ahem, it was nothing short of a Tragedy. We turned a deeper shade of blue and accepted it was one for sorrow. But, then, we got some exciting news. If you were around in the late ’90s you know what we’re talking about, if you weren’t – hard to bear. The ’90s was a decade of pedal pushers, butterfly clips, low-rise jeans (thank goodness that’s over). And Steps.

The five-piece pop combo were famous for their catchy beats and energetic dance routines, and this year they got back together to celebrate their 20-year anniversary with a bespoke UK tour.

And now they are coming to Dubai Opera, in April, for one night only, and we are already dusting off our cowboy hats for a bit of boot-scooting baby.

We spoke to Dubai resident, and founder of Dubai Performing Arts dance school, Lisa Scott-Lee, for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the UK tour to show us what we can expect when the band comes to the city.

“To celebrate our 20th anniversary in the music industry, Steps recently completed our sixth arena tour,” says Scott-Lee. “It consisted of 22 sold-out dates across the UK and Ireland. We had an amazing time on the road and here are some exclusive photos.

“This first photo is taken from one of our opening numbers, Chain Reaction, where we had revolving hospital beds and dancers dressed as doctors and nurses, in a nod to our video...”

“This photo was taken at the world-famous Wembley Arena. We were lucky enough to invite all our children to sing live on stage with us to celebrate the 21st time Steps have played Wembley. We were also presented with an award from Wembley Arena. It was a wonderful moment being able to share the stage with our children and one none of us will ever forget.”

“I was so impressed with our children, Jaden and Star Lily, who sang my lines and did a fantastic job in front of 15,000 people, and at such a young age (eight and nine years old). They made me the proudest mummy in the world!”

“This shot is taken from our disco section – if you couldn’t tell! We themed our two-hour show into five sections, which resulted in five costume changes. I love the whole creative process of designing our tour and outfits, and getting dressed up every night. The great thing with Steps is that there are no rules or boundaries when it comes to styling, so we can go full-out and have fun!”

“We were lucky enough to have Kylie’s Creative Director and Stylist Frank Strachan, who created the most amazing costumes, like these mirrorball outfits for our dancers. The lights bounced off them and shone across the whole arena. This was a real highlight for me.”

“My family and I have lived in Dubai for seven years and we love going to the theatre regularly. Because my husband Johnny and I are professional performers, we launched our Performing Arts school ’DPA’ three years ago here in Dubai and we are going from strength-to-strength. Our students and parents have become our ’DPA family’. There is such a wonderful atmosphere and our business is very much a family affair. I run the day-to-day side of it, while Johnny choreographs and teaches at DPA, along with many outside professional events. We have a fantastic team of highly qualified teachers and offer every aspect of the performing arts training for children and adults. Our children, Jaden and Star Lily, love attending DPA and we love the fact we can all go to work together! We are very passionate about our students performing as much as possible and ensure they are involved in various shows and events over the year.”

“For the finale, we finished the show with our number one hit, Tragedy, where we recreated our wedding video and got to wear dresses and tiaras. I was loving it!“

“This photo really captures the atmosphere in the arena when the confetti cannons went off to end the show. It was like being in a snow globe, and was an incredible feeling!”

“I am thrilled Steps are coming to Dubai on Friday April 27! I can’t wait for all my DPA students and our fans in the UAE to come and watch us perform at the prestigious Dubai Opera and show my Steps pals around our beautiful city! After being in entertainment for more than 20 years, I feel blessed to still be performing on stage and pass on my professional experience to my students.”
