Friends’ Avenue Café review

Super-friendly spot for lazy weekend lunches and breakfasts with the whole clan

Food

Self, and aptly, described as a “neighbourhood gathering spot”, Friends Avenue’s bright interiors are bathed in natural sunlight. Small plant pots zig-zag the white brick walls, larger family groups take centre tables, while smaller ones line the glass exterior both indoors and on the al fresco terrace.

Motor City provides the perfect location for this second, and newer, branch of this family-friendly eatery. When we arrive groups of friends are chuckling, families are enjoying their food, kids are painting, and solo guests are dining while they type away on their laptops. There may be some birds chirping, but all we can think of is the play area right across the street – it’s ideal for the little ones.

With high hopes for a filling breakfast, we go for The Big Brekkie Board – and that’s exactly what we get. The well-presented, rustic meal is comprised of breakfast favourites in decent portions.

The feta with sumac and zaatar adds much-needed sourness to the poached eggs, while the sautéed thyme mushrooms lend an earthy flavour.

There’s also red pepper hummus, asparagus, seared cherry tomatoes, and rye toast – it’s an all-round, all-day winner.

We also try Friends Avenue’s new Motor City project – Melt Burger Company – and we’re thrilled we did.

The Flying Chicken Burger is perfectly seasoned and golden-fried, sandwiched between a fluffy bun and smothered in American cheese, special sauce, house coleslaw – the works. Truffle fries are crispy and delicious, with Parmesan shavings dancing like cheesy confetti on top. They’re an ideal treat for parents.

The friendly service, good prices and community vibes are reason enough to visit even if you don’t live in the area. And if not there’s an equally good one at JLT, though there’s no play area right across the street. Decisions, decisions.
Open daily 8am-12am, breakfast served until 3pm. Unlicensed. The Ribbon Mall, Motor City (04 243 2866).
