270-degree cinema experience coming to Dubai

Fancy a film? Well this is Dubai, and sometimes an iMAX screen and a bucket of popcorn just doesn’t cut it here.

Luckily, ScreenX is coming to the city this year, meaning you’ll soon be able to watch your favourite flicks on a 270-degree multi-projection system.

The ScreenX is used within a theatre setting and will open this year at Reel Cinemas in The Dubai Mall, becoming one of the first ScreenX screens in the Middle East.

Created in 2012, ScreenX is a new cinema format along with 4DX, the multisensory cinema technology which includes motion and environmental effects.

The technology allows viewers to go beyond the frame of the traditional screen by expanding the image of feature films onto three theatre walls in an immersive, panoramic 270-degree format, of which there are currently only 142 in the world.

Damien Latham, chief executive pf Emaar Entertainment, said: “ScreenX will be a leading addition to our technology showcase that assures a stunning 270-degree panoramic film viewing experience that will further cement our market leadership.

“This is part of the transformation we are bringing across our cinemas by bringing innovative technology to the region first."

Byung-Hwan Choi, chief executive of CJ 4DPLEX, added: "Opening the first site at The Dubai Mall, we will deliver unmatched cinematic experience that will transform the movie-going experience in the UAE."

We'll keep you up to date on when it's launching.
