Chicco Caddy

An extremely lightweight pushchair (it weighs just 5.5kg) this is a no-frills, no-fuss product perfect for chucking in the back of the car or on a plane. It comes with its own carry bag with a detachable strap, which can be clipped onto the pushchair itself. For those moments when you’re juggling baby, car keys, handbag and stroller, it’s possible to open and close one-handed, and solid swivel wheels make it easy to maneuver. With a built-in sun shade that you can mould into shape, there’s a small backrest adjuster via zips and straps, although we have to say the recline is so minimal it’s hardly worth the bother. Reasonably robust and stylish and not too pricey, there’s a rain cover included should your ‘summer’ holiday include a trip to northern Europe.

Other colours: Red

Suitable from: six months to three years or 15kg

Price: Dhs253, including rain cover and carry bag

Delta Umbrella Stroller

A similar design to the Chicco Caddy, but much less sturdy, it has all the basic bits you’ll need, including a sun shade. Light as a feather, incredibly compact, this is so simple to put up and down, even the most gadget-phobic granny will be able to fathom it out. It doesn’t feel overly robust, but if you’re using it for the occasional holiday or weekend away, it will appeal to those recessionista mums at a bargainous Dhs99. However, anyone above average height will have to adopt a Quasimodo walk to reach the low handles, and the impractical, sickly sweet mint green colour and barf-inducing cutesy illustrations are enough to put us off. Raise the handles, switch to plain colours or tasteful, subtle patterns, and it’s a winner.

Other colours: unfortunately, no

Mamas & Papas Nipi

Nippy to assemble, nippy to put up, nippy to fold down, this Nipi pushchair does what it says on the tin (albeit spelt differently). With its funky ‘pear’ design and snazzy colour scheme, it’s certainly the chic-est of the bunch, and if you have doubts about the wisdom of white where babies are concerned, the fabric is detachable and machine-washable. Suitable for even the teeniest of travelling tots, the footrest is adjustable and the seat reclines to almost flat. This requires a little bit of fiddling if bubs is in situ and a lot of fiddling (and quite possibly some rude words) if it’s a snoozing toddler that you’re trying to make comfy. With swivel wheels and reasonably high handles for tall parents, it’s a sleek, smooth ride for all concerned, and pretty light at around six kilograms.

A small shopping sack underneath is great for a few toys, snacks and drinks, but not much else. At Dhs495 (plus extra for accessories such as rain cover and parasol), it seems expensive for a second pushchair, but brilliant value if it’s the only one you’ll ever use. One silly thing: the handles on the beach bag that comes with the summer accessory pack (extra charge) are too short for the pushchair. Manufacturers take note – this is the kind of small thing that makes mothers weep…

Other colours: Yes, and all very hip

Suitable from: birth to three years or 15kg

Price: Dhs495, all-weather pack Dhs250, summer accessory pack Dhs330

Maclaren stroller by Philippe Starck

This graceful pushchair – a new one by the granddaddies of stroller design – is, we admit, not the lightest pushchair for travelling. But it is compact and super-sleek and, hey, we were just curious. In streamlined aluminium tubing and gender-neutral, stain-resistant fabrics, the funky handles will suit even the lankiest of dads.

Straightforward to put up and down, the real beauty of this pushchair is that it’s tough enough to use as an everyday stroller as well as a holiday buggy. A smooth, sleek ride for nippers and their parents, it’s not suitable for newborns but it’s built to handle toddlers up to 25kg. With a five-point harness, it feels robust and secure, and it comes with a handy basket slot for storing nappy bags or shopping, and a hood, rain shield and travel bag are included in the price.

Other colours: lime green

Mothercare Jive

This own-brand pushchair is not only light, but also incredibly compact. In colourful prints and characters such as this Thomas The Tank Engine version, it’s bold and bright, which may go some way to disguising the stains and marks it will inevitably pick up. Because the lining’s attached, you can’t take it off and fling it in the washing machine, although you can sponge it lightly with warm water. The seat partially reclines via a belt at the back, an easy process minus the child. Simple to put up and fold down, it’s ideal for holidays or trips to see grandparents who may freak at the thought of assembling anything more complicated. There’s no shade included, but rain covers and parasols are available at extra cost, which makes this a tad pricey compared to the Chicco.

Other colours: pink Fifi, pink sweetheart, blue can’t catch me
