Had they filmed Jaws in Dubai, rather than at Martha’s Vineyard, there’s a good chance you’d have never heard one of the most famous phrases in cinematic history: ‘We’re going to need a bigger boat’. More likely lines would have been, ‘This boat’s way too quick for a fishing trip,’ or ‘Wowzers, I know there’s a shark out there and everything, but seriously, has anybody had a look in the hold? There’s a bath down there. A bath!’ Because, of course, this is Dubai, where all boats come in one size and one size only: massive.

This year the Dubai International Boat Show steps into gear to showcase no less than 25 ‘superyachts’ (which means they exceed 21 metres in length) and 400 ‘normal’ boats (read: probably as far removed from the word ‘normal’ as humanly possible). Add to that the unveiling of 13 global launches and you’re guaranteed a spectacular event, even if boats aren’t your thing.

The Boat Show is at Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi on March 9-13, 3pm-9pm daily. Tickets are Dhs55 per person; kids go free. For info, see www.boatshowdubai.com.
