Essential Dubai phone numbers

Emergency breakdown, plumbing, doctors and more for life in Dubai

The Knowledge

Occasionally, disaster strikes. But fear not. We’ve put together a guide you’ll never want to lose, containing every Dubai resident’s must-have contacts.

Air conditioning and plumbing
A malfunctioning A/C system is the last thing you want to be confronted with as the weather heats up. If you find yourself with beads of sweat running down your nose while your thermostat insists it’s 10°C inside, it’s time to call Salam. He and his team of fixers have resolved every crisis we’ve presented them with so far, and they can also tackle plumbing emergencies (when our toilet spontaneously cracked open one night, flooding the house, they were there to help 90 minutes after we called them).
From Dhs150 for A/C servicing. Various locations. 050 498 3137

Painting, decorating and maintenance
Dubai home management company Hitches & Glitches prides itself on a 30-minute response time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call them in for anything from mounting your new TV on the wall to retiling your villa, rewiring distribution boards or full-scale renovations. TV mounting from Dhs250.
Locations across Dubai. 800 42634

Though uncommon in most apartment blocks, gas cookers can be found in some, and most villas will have a gas connection. Some residents may also have barbecues that require a fuel source. Emirates Gas has a number of distributors across the city who service different areas, delivering 11kg, 22kg and 44kg cylinders. Their website provides a full list of distributor names and phone numbers, or you can call the EG hotline to
be directed to the right source.
From Dhs75 for 11kg cylinder. Various locations, 800 36427

Key cutting
Everyone needs spares – we recommend giving an extra set to a trustworthy neighbour. Most regular keys are easily copied, but some residential developments in Dubai (particularly those built by Emaar) use ‘security keys’ which can only be replaced by specialists on contract with the developer for a hefty price, making it more economical to replace the lock altogether (if you’re renting, it’s always best to run this past your landlord first).
From Dhs15 per key. Minutes, various locations including Mall of the Emirates. 04 340 8281

Lock replacement
Sometimes, keys get stuck in keyholes and snap after too much force. Other times, you lose your key. If you’re truly unlucky, you might only realise this once you arrive home at the unsociable hour of 1am. Fortunately, it is in this kind of situation where Golden Key Locks Repairing will become your new best friend, having been known to turn up and fit a brand new lock, complete with keys, in under an hour, at 2am in the morning.
Door opening and lock replacement from Dhs100 near and around Karama, from Dhs250 in New Dubai areas, from Dhs300 in Discovery Gardens and Jebel Ali areas. Karama. 04 335 0177

Smartphone and tablet repairs
CelMetro specialises in iPad, iPod, BlackBerry and 24-hour iPhone repairs. They can replace an iPhone screen in 30 minutes, and claim to have done more than 2,000 such jobs. For any other complaints, the maximum repair time is 48 hours, and if you’re too busy to find their office, they will arrange free pick-up and delivery within Dubai.

If you’re moving into an unfurnished apartment or villa, you will most likely need to find someone to come and fit curtains for you. The man known only as Jamal is highly recommended. Call up for an appointment and he will present himself at your residence, armed with a wide range of fabrics. In some cases, he has been known to return with the final product in a mere four days.

Clothing repairs

Shoe re-heeling
Dubai’s NDust Shoe Repairs offers an extensive list of services, including total heel replacement, toe tips and heel tips for ladies’ shoes, sole replacement, re-stitching of soles, dyeing and much more. Hems and alterations
For a quick hemming job or taking in an item of clothing that’s an inch or two larger than perfect, Megastitch Tailoring in Al Barsha has proved a reliable spot. As well as speedy repair jobs (often just a couple of hours if you stress the urgency), they can also create copies of garments, but you will need to supply your own fabric.

Car assistance and removal men

Breakdown recovery and towing
Wherever your car breaks down in Dubai, Saeed Abdullah makes it his business to get there to help, and can tow you to either the British-owned Saluki Motorsports garage (don’t be fooled by the name, this air-conditioned workshop takes all automotives), or another of your choosing. If you’re stuck in the sand next to your apartment block – no problem, for an extra Dhs70 or Dhs80, he’ll have you out.

Man with a van
If you’re moving house within Dubai and need help ferrying your knick-knacks, boxes and bulky furniture between residences, it’s handy to have a man with a van. Locally-based driver Noor is a reliable person to know, and as such often finds himself in demand. If he’s unable to make it himself, his son Sohail will sometimes step in to help. From Dhs200, price dependent on distance and number of trips required.
Various locations. 050 350 5818

Relocation moving and storage
For bigger moves, whether you’re moving between emirates, moving back to your home country or heading off for expat adventures in pastures new, Allied Pickfords offers lower rates than some of the other big names here. They also offer storage facilities in the UAE (and worldwide), which are useful if you’re between homes or renting your place out while you travel.

All medical professionals employed by the service are trained to quickly screen for emergency needs, and refer callers accordingly. In non-emergency situations, they can advise callers based on their condition, location and the availability of local healthcare. The number is only supplied once you’ve signed up online.
