Occasionally, disaster strikes. But fear not. We’ve put together a guide you’ll never want to lose, containing every Dubai resident’s must-have contacts.
Air conditioning and plumbing
A malfunctioning A/C system is the last thing you want to be confronted with as the weather heats up. If you find yourself with beads of sweat running down your nose while your thermostat insists it’s 10°C inside, it’s time to call Salam. He and his team of fixers have resolved every crisis we’ve presented them with so far, and they can also tackle plumbing emergencies (when our toilet spontaneously cracked open one night, flooding the house, they were there to help 90 minutes after we called them).
From Dhs150 for A/C servicing. Various locations. 050 498 3137
Painting, decorating and maintenance

Though uncommon in most apartment blocks, gas cookers can be found in some, and most villas will have a gas connection. Some residents may also have barbecues that require a fuel source. Emirates Gas has a number of distributors across the city who service different areas, delivering 11kg, 22kg and 44kg cylinders. Their website provides a full list of distributor names and phone numbers, or you can call the EG hotline to
be directed to the right source.

Everyone needs spares – we recommend giving an extra set to a trustworthy neighbour. Most regular keys are easily copied, but some residential developments in Dubai (particularly those built by Emaar) use ‘security keys’ which can only be replaced by specialists on contract with the developer for a hefty price, making it more economical to replace the lock altogether (if you’re renting, it’s always best to run this past your landlord first).
From Dhs15 per key. Minutes, various locations including Mall of the Emirates. 04 340 8281
Sometimes, keys get stuck in keyholes and snap after too much force. Other times, you lose your key. If you’re truly unlucky, you might only realise this once you arrive home at the unsociable hour of 1am. Fortunately, it is in this kind of situation where Golden Key Locks Repairing will become your new best friend, having been known to turn up and fit a brand new lock, complete with keys, in under an hour, at 2am in the morning.
