Is online learning for you?

The pros and cons of distance learning

The Knowledge

The pros:
Work/life balance – you’re in charge of when and where you study, making it easier to fit in around work and family commitments.

Price – online study is almost always cheaper, because the tuition’s overheads are so much lower.

Access – study materials are normally easier to access online for web-based courses – and reading lists shorter – as students aren’t expected to have access to an academic library.

The cons:

Motivation – many find it very difficult to self-motivate themselves to study without the formal rigour of a classroom. Have you got what it takes?

Teaching – while web-based courses frequently offer video lectures, or even the opportunity to Skype tutors, many students claim these engagements – which can be completed in your pyjamas – are rarely a complete substitute for the experience of coming face to face with an expert.

Solitude – many students find brainstorming with fellow students beneficial to both their understanding and social experience of study.
