The Knowledge

As excited as we were to see The Automatic play in Dubai, we did wonder how well others would receive them. We’ve all been to those gigs where everyone stands about bored while waiting for ‘that one song’ to arrive. And, despite them having two albums to their name, a quick straw poll showed that most people in the Time Out posse could only name the single ‘Monster’ off the tops of their heads.

Still, local lot Tim Hassall And The August Company got the crowd warmed up, and by the time The Automatic were halfway through their first song, the front row was jumping and shouting with the best of them. It was helped by the band, of course, who’ve got their set down to a precise art, zipping from one big shout-a-long to the next.

‘Did you see that?’ one, possibly slightly deaf, punter bellowed at us as they stepped off the stage. ‘That’s what we need in Dubai! More stuff like that!’ We couldn’t agree more
