Orbit Showtime Network to launch video on demand

Cable TV operator to offer new cinema package

Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) is set to launch a video-on-demand pay-TV service in September, it was reported on Monday.

The company said it could charge customers in Saudi Arabia, where cinema is banned, more to see recently-released movies, UAE daily The National reported.

Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, the president and chief executive of the satellite network, told the paper that subscribers would be able to view the latest movies for between $4-5 a film.

But he added that the company might charge more in Saudi Arabia, where cinemas were banned 30 years ago by the clergy.

The network currently operates a video-on-demand service, but this is the first time it will charge subscribers separately for current VOD content, the paper added.

The service will showcase movies up to six months earlier than on Showmovies, d'Halluin told the paper.
