Legendary players of Real Madrid and Barcelona faced off at Dubai World Trade Centre last night as the red tape was cut on the 2011 Dubai International Indoor Football Championship.

With a host of Champions League and La Liga medals between them, the likes of Sergi Barjuan, Victor Sanchez, Santi Ezquerro and Pedro Contreras lined up for the European heavyweights, in a match eventually won 4-3 by Barca.

A luxury villa on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah has been sold for nearly USD 7.6 million at an auction, bucking the trend that saw property prices on the island decline steeply in the recent months.

The six-bedroom Signature villa, located on a 13,000 sq ft plot, attracted an opening bid of USD 5.9 million (22 million dirhams) at a private auction, developer Nakheel said in an emailed statement.

After three years of renting a villa in Dubai, French engineer Philippe Bakhos has decided to buy.

The 38-year-old is taking advantage of some of the lowest interest rates ever offered in the United Arab Emirates to purchase a three-bedroom villa for 2.5 million dirhams ($680,661) in “The Springs,” a development about 20km from the center of the city.
