Beach polo was invented in Dubai in 2004 but a Palestinian businessman is set to pump Dhs15 million revamping the sport ahead of event this weekend and is planning to expand the idea around the world.
‘We invented beach polo here nine years ago – it was the first time ever it was played officially anywhere in the world,’ Palestinian-born Sam Katiela told Time Out Dubai.
The game has since been played in more than 30 cities around the world but the Dubai homecoming will see Katiela and his backers investing Dhs15 million into revamping and boosting the sport.
On Friday 19 and Saturday 20, four teams will be pitched against one another on the sand – one from Switzerland, another from Saudi Arabia and two from the UAE.
‘It’s going to be full of action and spirit – wherever you sit, you will feel the heat and power of the game,’ Katiela said.
The event takes place at the Mina A’Salam, full details of the event are available here
