Dubai in talks to stage Amir Khan boxing match

Boxing organisers are in talks with the Dubai government to stage a match between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander on December 7 and will travel to the emirate next month to scout for potential venues, it has been reported.

Amir Khan will challenge Devon Alexander for the American’s IBF world welterweight title and organisers are close to signing a deal for the biggest ever boxing match in the region, according to a report in the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper.

“We have opened discussions with the ruling family of the Emirates who have made it very clear that they are keen to put on a major boxing event,” Richard Schaefer, chief executive of organisers Golden Boy, was quoted as saying.

Schaefer is due to fly to Dubai next month to scout for potential venues and the date has been set for December 7.

Should Khan be victorious at the Dubai fight it would put him in the frame for a $200m super-fight against American world champion Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas next spring.

“Amir needs one fight at welterweight, along with a title, to set up the match with Floyd. He is getting that chance against Devon, who has agreed the fight. We will be finalising and signing the contracts in the next couple of weeks,” Schaefer added.

Schaefer said 26 year-old Khan, who is Muslim, was eager to bring the sport of boxing to the Middle East: “This promises to be a tremendous opportunity for us and for boxing.”

Mike Tyson previously attempted to set up a match in Dubai three years ago but talks stalled at the last minute.
