Giant Rubber Duck causes a stir

18-metre inflatable is not the real deal, says Dutch artist

Knowledge story, The Knowledge

It appears Dubai Creek’s colourful new resident (an 18ft inflatable duck, if you haven’t already spotted it) is not everything it seems. It was installed to celebrate National Day and Dubai’s Expo 2020 win, while highlighting water conservation, but mobile car wash firm GeoWash, the company behind it, has incurred the wrath of Florentijn Hofman, the Dutch artist who owns the original. According to Hofman, the duck that has toured cities such as Amsterdam, Osaka, Sydney, Sao Paulo and Hong Kong, is currently in Taiwan – not Dubai. As a result, GeoWash’s CEO has revealed that its duck has never been on tour, and was in fact made in China, before being shipped to Dubai.
