Nearly 750,000 use Dubai Metro on New Year's Eve

More than 1.6 million people used Dubai's mass transit system on New Year's Eve, the emirate's transport authority has revealed.

The largest proportion of the 1,656,286 passengers used Dubai Metro (727,829 passengers) while 525,997 used taxis on the last day and night of 2013, a statement from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.

Bus passengers totalled 314,109, while inter-city bus passengers numbered 44,587, and marine transit users totalled 43,764.

Dr Aysha Al Busmait, spokesperson of the RTA, said: "The RTA had worked out a comprehensive traffic plan to control vehicular movement and public transport on New Year's Eve, which witnessed intensive traffic movement, especially in the surroundings of Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, and the Palm Jumeirah.

"The plan took into account integrating various transport modes and traffic systems to facilitate the movement of people to and from these areas. Metro service hours were extended to ensure continuous services from 5.30am until the early hours of January 1 2014.
