Barbecue season is in full swing, but those who grill in undesignated areas on Dubai’s beaches could find themselves lumbered with a cash penalty, as the Dubai Municipality steps up its enforcement of city-wide rules. Following failure by many members of the public to heed verbal warnings, fines of Dhs1,000 are now being handed out to those who build fires anywhere other than in purpose-built barbecue stands, such as those seen in Al Mamzar Beach Park. According to comments by Khalid Sulaiteen, head of the Municipality’s Environmental Emergency Office, if beachgoers do not see a designated place to grill food, then it is not permitted anywhere on that beach.
