Summer: The season of rock

Wave of rock gigs coming to The Music Room

The Knowledge

We dig up the juicy rumours, new openings and hot events in Dubai’s music and nightlife scene.

As things heat up nightlife invariably moves inside – which may be bad news for fans of house beats and pool parties, but not so for those who dig live music. We find the local music scene picks up in summer months, with black T-shirts taking on a weird anti-sun chic as the rockers come out to play. On that note it’s fitting that The Music Room has recently announced a packed bill of gigs for coming weeks. On Friday May 2 check out post-rock and nu-jazz influenced Lebanese indie group Pindoll at the Majestic Hotel Towers venue. A week later there’s a Guns n’ Roses tribute on May 9, while tribute is played a day later to the icon Bob Marley. The month wraps up on May 30 with an ambitious-sounding Desert Experiment Session, which is expected to see local bands do interesting things.

At the other end of nightlife spectrum, high-end nightspot Armani/Privé is preparing to celebrate four years at the base of the world’s tallest building – in the most beguiling of ways. The futuristic nightclub is now taking a leaf from the decadence of ancient times, hosting a Roman Empire theme for its Thursday May 1 birthday bash.

Over in Wafi we’ve heard ping-pong-themed nightspot SPiN Dubai is undergoing a refurbishment, which will see the kooky venue boast a new look, private rooms, covered sports terrace, upgraded menu and new theme nights.

Lastly top Ghantoot beach club Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE has given us a sneak preview of its May line-up. Head down for a double bill of Martinez Brothers and Richy Ahmed on Friday May 2, Marco Carola a week later, Dixon
on May 16, Cassy on May 23 and Radioslave on May 30.

That’s all for now – get out and play!
