Williams win

The US tennis star collected a Dubai win, and her 40th career victory…

Venus Williams overcame French finalist Virginie Razzano in two sets, to clinche the women’s title at Dubai Tennis Championships this weekend.

Williams, 28, who counts seven grand slams - five of them at Wimbledon - among her accolades, showed her metal in a 6-4, 6-2 game at Dubai Tennis Stadium.

But Razzano, 25, didn’t go quietly. The formidable Frenchwoman held off three break points from Venus, before finally succumbing.

Williams walked away with another Dhs1.2million to add to her already sizeable bank account while Razzano left much-admired for her game.

We’re already looking forward to the men’s games which start today.
