Dubai Roads & Transport Authority is looking to raise standards among the emirate’s taxi drivers by offering cash rewards. Drivers will be rewarded for exceptional behaviour on a quarterly basis.
Drivers earning 100 points will receive Dhs300 in cash, a Dhs100 shopping voucher and other incentives. The RTA will reward drivers reaching 98 points with Dhs100 in cash and a Dhs100 shopping voucher, while those with 95-97 will receive just the voucher.
“Drivers’ merit and demerit points scheme is applied through tracking the mistakes made by drivers and holding them accountable by means of having negative points registered against them based on several grounds,” Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO of the RTA’s Dubai Taxi Corporation told Arabian Business.
He added: “Examples of these include breaching the permissible error thresholds where the driver is held responsible for errors committed, violating traffic regulations, excessive speed, and recurrent complaints filed by customers against drivers.”
Malik said the RTA will “rehabilitate” underperforming taxi drivers with training courses. He added drivers that continue to fall short of the RTA’s standards may be sacked.
